Ranked top ten on UltimateBet.com

I'm currently ranked top ten online at UltimateBet.com. If I finish #1 Sunday, I get to play for Phil Hellmuth Jr. (the greatest player of all-time!) heads-up for free online with a chance to win $1,000!

My screen name is "Auto Kash". Check me out on the leaderboard...

***Update: I climbed as high as top five on the leaderboard, but I didn't win so the heads-up battle between the Poker brat and I will have to wait... till maybe the WSOP?

1st place at UltimateBet.com's $20,000 Guaranteed tournament

1st place!!!

I'm so excited. I had to post something on here even though it most likely will look like gibberish. I wish my brother was here at the house so we could be screaming together. I guess that's what Friday is for when we go to the Argosy in Indiana!

I just won UltimateBet.com's $20,000 Guaranteed tournament tonight. It ended only minutes ago. I saved all the hands and recorded my five and a half hour journey to the Final Table on the computer with hand history logs. At my first table, I was seated next to "Pearljammer", the top five ranked online player in the world! WOW! He finished in 21st place.

--Cardplayer.com reports-- Jon “Pearljammer” Turner rocks the online poker world almost as hard as the band Pearl Jam rocks the real one. The young man from Raleigh, North Carolina, has racked up over $87,000 in Online Player of the Year winnings since January. A multi-table tournament specialist with a devastating heads-up game, he has also netted over $361,000 in live tournaments. He cashed twice in the 2007 Winter Poker Open, first for third place ($59,138) in the $2,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em event and then twelfth in the $10,000-buy-in championship event, netting $72,003. He has cashed six times in WSOP events.

I also took out the first person in the money, "JohnnyGStaks", who won the Bodog $100,000-guaranteed event which had 864 entrants last night, for $25,000! Needless to say, I outlasted a very strong field.

I'm going to study and and analyze the hand histories from this tournament so I can focus on getting back to the top as soon as I can.

I cashed in three out of four big tournaments (1 sit-n-go) tonight bringing in over $6,300! I didn't even play my first hand until I got back to my house from UD at 6pm!

Not a bad day at all...

Poker Tournament tonight!

A live tournament tonight at KU!

-results/stories will be posted later.

I played in this tournament Saturday night and it was insane. There were 48 players and I managed to make it to the final table for the third straight year (4th/39 in '06. 8th/46 in '07, and 6th/48 in '08). I came 6th but who the hell cares? My friend Mike K. came in 11th and we had a lot of fun being seated at the same table and making fun of everyone's play just quietly enough where they couldn't hear it.

There's no need to discuss hands in depth. I played the best. I made a lot of great moves and laydowns (folding tens four handed to jacks pre-flop), but in the end I couldn't get the win. Congrats to Bob S.'s girlfriend Kara who outlasted me and came 2nd! It was fun drinking with her later as she didn't let me forget who did better all night. =P

I'm going to post a huge section analyzing a few important hands I have saved from UltimateBet.com showing good/bad plays from me and reasons behind my decisions. It's going to be very interesting and a lot of fun. Look for the post soon!

A great night playing cash games!

Enough of this music crap right? I'll stick to poker.

Last night was a huge night for me on UltimateBet. First, let me rant a little bit. I've played in 16 tournies and only cashed in three so far on UB! Yuck! 19% cash rate is great for some people, but not for the self-proclaimed greatest Hold'em player in the world. I only joined UB to take advantage of their 111% sign-up bonus (up to $1,100), but I'm starting to like the site a lot. Poker Stars will always be the biggest site in the world with the most tournament options, but UB has a lot of very loose-aggressive players which is perfect for my style. My style is, of course, shaped after the "Hellmuthian style", which is allowing your opponent to take control of the hand, giving him the decisions, giving him the control, and essentially, waiting for him to mess up. I win a lot of money off check-calling bluffers, it's amazing. Let's look at this closer:

In a six max cash game table, many times it will come down to the blinds. Here is what I'm talking about when I say I check-call bluffers. Four people fold around to me in the small blind where I have ATo. I limp for $1 (pot size $4). Player X, in the BB, checks. Flop A-9-4. I check. Player X bets pot $4 (pot size $8), I call $4 (pot size $12). Turn is a 4. I check. Player X checks (pot size s till $12). River is a 2. Now let's stop for a second and realize that I know I have the best hand. I'm not certain, as with almost anything in Texas Hold'em, BUT I believe I have the best hand. Almost anyone would agree with that but this is where people make the mistake of leading out on the river. If you know Player X is aggressive, why not check and snap him off on a bluff? That's the Hellmuthian style. That's the way I play. Now back to the hand on the river with pot size of $12. I check, Player X bets $8 (pot size $20), I call $8 (pot size $28). Played X shows QJo, I show Aces up and collect the pot.

How is this profitable? There are many reasons on every street. Here are a few reasons. If I raise PF from the SB, I'm out of position with a marginal hand. Player X would've called with QJo and the pot would have been $12 (my $6 raise, his $6 call). I'd bet out the flop of A94, after showing strength pre-flop and on the flop, where my opponent with no pair-no draw would have folded. Why would he try to bluff with no outs against a played who has shown maximum strength? Player X knows better than to try that but he would try to bluff a player who did't raise pre-flop and who didn't bet the flop. Get it? Disguise your hand against an aggressive player. Give him rope to hang himself!

Now a quick look at the river check. On a board of A94-4-2, I'm almost certain in a "battle of the blinds" situation that my AT is the best hand. Again, why not bet? The downside to allowing your opponent to take control of the hand (the Hellmuthian style) is that many times you do not know the strength of his hand. If you bet the river after he has shown strength on the flop, it would seem highly unlikely that you would be bluffing him which would allow him to fold any marginal to bad hands (like the QJo for Queen high). Since we don't have access to his hole cards, we understand that he could have AT beat.

If he has a hand like, 54 (trips) or 53 (straight), check-calling is STILL the best option. If we bet out on the river against Player X, we'll get raised and loose more money. Our bet of $8 plus his raise to $24 will cost us $24 dollars. If we check, he will bet the winning hand, and when we call and lose, we'll only have lost $8.

If he has a bad hand and we bet $8, he will fold, and we will be even. If he has a band hand and we check, he can either check which will make us even, or he can try to bluff you by betting $8, which we will call and now be up $8. How often will he bluff? This is something you must find out by studying his past play (betting patterns). Many aggressive players don't pass up a chance to bluff. What is the usual amount of hands a player will try to bluff out of ten. For our example, we'll use 50% (.5($8)=$4), although depending on the player, it may actually be higher, therefore making this play even more profitable.

Final Results for a river bet for this hand:
10% of the time he is winning - we lose $24 (-3 bets)
If he is losing - we are even (0 bets)
- Thus in ten hands, we will win 9 times (9($0)) making $0, and lose 1 (1($24)) costing us ($24). = -$24

Final Results for a river check-call for this hand:
10% of the time he is winning - we lose $8 (-1 bet)
If he is losing - we are even or up $8 (+ .5 bet) *$4 approximate based on the math of .5($8).
- Thus in ten hands, we will win 9 times (9($4)) making $36, and lose 1 (1($8)) costing us ($24).
= +$24

There is a difference of $48 in the two different plays. Do the math if you play for a full day, week, or a year. These little plays separate the good players from the great ones. Think about this the next time you're in a battle of the blinds situation with an aggressive player. Let him take control of the hand and bluff off his chips to you. You'll profit greatly by allowing him to try and make the big bluff, and then snapping him off when he least expects it.

Anyway, I played six tables of $1/$2 cash games for three hours last night. I bought in with the max of $200 at each table ($1,200 total in play), and I cashed out with a profit of $718 ($,1918 total at the end)! It was a very good day for online poker after a grueling day at school.

I'll be back at the tables today on UltimateBet.com playing under the name Auto Kash. Which reminds me, I need to work on staying true to that name and none of this less than 20% cashing bullshit. I'll be back to tournies soon, but for now I just may stay on these cash tables. Watch out!

The Stonemill Trio live at Art Street Cafe!

I'm playing a show this Saturday, January 19, on the campus of University of Dayton at 7:00pm. We're playing at the Art Street Cafe for an hour. I'm playing with Mike K. and Brian H., under the name The Stonemill Trio. This is a decent gig because we're getting paid, all the sound equipment is being provided, it's inside, free drinks all night and free food for the band, and my family is coming to watch (minus Erika and Rachel, but plus Gabe from UC Law).

I will post the set list which is made up of covers and originals later on once it is finalized. I might even bring CDs to sell for $5 from Gabe and my band From Midnight On. If you're interested in listening to our music, check it out on MySpace for free at MySpace.com/FMOmusic!

We've sold over 2,500 copies of the CD and we're not giving up yet. We've opened for Blessid Union of Souls and played hundreds of bars, clubs, and other local venues. Gabe is at Law School at UC so for the meantime, I'll be playing live with my two friends as The Stonemill Trio, but always recording and pursuing a magicial future (shut up, we've got a chance) with my brother.

P.S. The show is free Saturday night so if you're reading this and you go to UD, (basically if you're name is Joe D.) you better attend the show. =) Actually, it doesn't benefit me at all if you come so screw you. Just kidding, I'll see you Saturday night!

Golden Globes = not the final word on Oscar Best Picture

I understand that No Country for Old Men didn't win the Golden Globe for Best Picture. What the hell does that prove?

2005
Golden Globe Winner: The Aviator
Oscar Winner: Million Dollar Baby

2006
Golden Globe Winner: Brokeback Mountain
Oscar Winner: Crash (not nominated for GG, much like Oscar winner Chicago in 2000)

2007
Golden Globe Winner: Babel
Oscar Winner: The Departed

2008
Golden Globe Winner: Atonement
Oscar Winner: ???

Get it? My money's still on No Country for Old Men.

Golden Globes

Since there wasn't much of a show last night, I'll keep this post as short as possible. Just like I predicted, Daniel Day-Lewis and Javier Bardem won for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor, respectively. I was wrong, however, about Best Picture. Atonement won the award, stealing it from No Country for Old Men.

I'm a professional poker writer! (officially)

I just received my first check in the mail from Predictem! I am officially a professional poker writer!

Predictem.com

I was hired on to write poker articles for Predictem.com. After reviewing this blog and a thirty minute phone interview, I was picked up to help inform, entertain, and discuss poker daily with the visitors at the site. Predictem is a great website for gamblers all the way from betting sports, horses, casino games, and now poker.

I get paid a good amount for my writing. A hell of a lot more than I thought I deserve but let's face it, who knows the game better than me?

Anywho, I will start posting my articles and/or links to my writing when it gets published on their site. They receive around 6,000 hits a day and are striving to be at the top of the list with CardPlayer.com and other large gambling sites. The top sites can generate as much as 40,000 hits daily!

My original content helps build "search engine credibility" which leads to more hits, which leads to more readers, which leads to more companies posting advertisements, which leads to Predictem making more money. That's why they pay me for my services.

I'm excited about this job and I know I can write important, helpful, and interesting articles that people will enjoy reading. My first few articles were focused on tips from live casinos, a few biographies on top players, and a couple exciting stories from past live action games! =)

Charlie Wilson's War...again.

I'm going to see Charlie Wilson's War tonight at local theature for the second time in a week. I am excited to see this film, mainly to witness Phillip Seymour Hoffman's amazing performance.

Charlie Wilson's War will be nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, but can it win? Do I think it will beat There Will Be Blood or No Country for Old Men? No.... but Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are always good for some great Oscar Buzz.

Reviews coming soon for 2007 movies...

Sit & Go Chart

Here is my overall profit in the month of December. I played under the name "Dayton2Vegas" at FullTiltPoker.com. Enjoy... I know I did.

Happy New Year!

I'd like to start off the year wishing everyone a happy and healthy new year!

New Poker After Dark shows have been airing. The new season kicked off Monday. Phil Hellmuth Jr. won the first tourny of the year! Oh baby!

I have been switching from PokerStars, UltimateBet, and FullTilt over the past 45 days. Ultimate gave me 111% back on a deposit up to $1,100. How can I pass that up?
